Its layout differs from a conventional enclosed museum: visitors move between four buildings through partly open-air passages that maintain a direct connection with Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami.

    The museum’s permanent experiences move between South Florida ecosystems, marine life, astronomy, human health, paleontology, flight, and active scientific research. Most displays rely on animals, specimens, large-scale engineering, demonstrations, and hands-on activities rather than long walls of text.     Frost Planetarium

    The 250-seat dome theater uses 8K projection, 16-million-color imagery, and surround sound. Programs change during the day, covering subjects such as spaceflight, astronomy, Earth systems, and live interactive missions.

    Science Galleries

    Permanent spaces include Power of Science, meLab, Feathers to the Stars, River of Grass, and The Dig. Their subjects range from coral research and human biology to powered flight, Everglades ecology, and the preparation of fossil material.

    Why the Aquarium Works from Top to Bottom

    The Aquarium makes more sense when explored in its intended vertical direction. Begin at The Vista, the open-air upper level where visitors look across the surface of the Gulf Stream Aquarium and encounter habitats associated with beaches, mangroves, coral reefs, and the Everglades. This level also contains the Florida Bay touch experience, where contact with a stingray may be offered under staff supervision.

    Continue downward into The Dive. The light becomes dimmer, the viewpoints shift below the surface, and smaller habitats place coral communities and marine species closer to eye level. The change in atmosphere is part of the design — the route gradually leaves Miami’s bright outdoor light behind.

    The lowest aquarium area, The Deep, leads to the Oculus. This circular acrylic lens forms the floor-level viewing portal beneath the Gulf Stream Aquarium. Sharks, rays, and schools of open-water fish can cross directly overhead, giving visitors a view that cannot be produced by a standard vertical aquarium window.

    Route note: Starting at the upper aquarium level prevents unnecessary backtracking. Families using strollers or visitors who need step-free access can follow the same sequence by elevator.

    Engineering Hidden Behind the Oculus

    The Gulf Stream Aquarium is a cornerless concrete cone designed for animals that naturally travel through open water. Its curved form lets large fish continue swimming without repeatedly meeting the sharp ends found in rectangular tanks.

    Building the tank required a continuous concrete pour lasting about 25 hours. Engineers used roughly 1,200 cubic yards of concrete and strengthened the cone with 9.5 miles of post-tension cable. The finished aquarium and its water weigh approximately 9.5 million pounds.

    The Oculus deserves more than a quick photograph. Stand near its edge and watch how animals appear, disappear, and return across the curved field of view. The lens turns the aquarium ceiling into a moving study of shape, distance, and animal movement.

    An Explorer Ticket includes one Frost Planetarium presentation, but seats are subject to availability. Show reservations are made after arrival through the onsite kiosk or a personal mobile device and operate on a first-come basis.

    1. Reserve a planetarium time soon after entering. This gives the rest of the day a clear anchor.
    2. Begin the Aquarium at The Vista. Descend through The Dive and finish beneath the Oculus in The Deep.
    3. Use the upper galleries around the scheduled show. The Dig, River of Grass, Feathers to the Stars, and meLab sit on different levels and wings.
    4. Leave Power of Science for a flexible period. Its hands-on stations are easy to shorten or extend according to available time.

    A visit of roughly three to four hours suits many families and first-time visitors. People who watch demonstrations, read the science labels closely, or spend time in every interactive may prefer most of a day. The building is larger than it first appears, and moving between wings adds time.

    The Dig

    This paleontology gallery explains how fossils are located, collected, cleaned, and studied. Displays include tactile material, fossil-preparation activities, and a life-size cast of the Tufts-Love Tyrannosaurus rex skull. Visitors may also see museum paleontologists or technicians working when research activity is underway.

    Power of Science

    The gallery connects current research with four areas: oceans, the environment, human bodies, and the universe. Objects and interactives include scientific instruments, rare specimens, a periodic-table installation, marine research, and a replica of ocean explorer Sylvia Earle’s JIM diving suit.

    Feathers to the Stars

    This gallery traces flight through feathered dinosaurs, birds, aircraft, rockets, and space exploration. Its interactive stations work especially well for children who learn by testing shapes, forces, and movement rather than reading a continuous historical display.

    meLab

    Spread across two levels, meLab examines how body systems, mental wellbeing, medicine, and everyday choices affect health. The Journey section focuses on personal choices, while The Discovery looks more closely at how researchers measure and understand the body.

    Architecture Shaped for Miami Weather

    Grimshaw arranged the museum as four separate but connected structures. Open-air courtyards and covered passages keep Biscayne Bay, the skyline, and Maurice A. Ferré Park visible while visitors move between galleries.

    This layout also means that part of the visit takes place in Miami’s heat, humidity, breeze, or sudden rain. Lightweight clothing and a small rain layer are useful even though the main galleries are climate-controlled. Outdoor terraces may feel very different from the darker Aquarium and Planetarium interiors.

    The LEED-certified campus uses systems intended to reduce energy and water use. Museum data estimates 27 percent lower energy use than a similar building type. Rainwater collection may save about 350,000 gallons of city water each year, while graywater reuse may save another 250,000 gallons annually.

    Solar panels, white and green roofs, natural ventilation in exterior galleries, efficient aquarium pumps, and under-building parking all form part of the site. The architecture therefore acts as a working example of environmental engineering, even when visitors are focused on the animals and exhibits.

    Current 2026 Exhibition: Extreme Sports and Soccer Science

    Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits is scheduled through September 7, 2026, in the first-floor Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery. Entry is included with regular museum admission.

    The exhibition uses physical challenges, equipment, artifacts, and simulations to explain reaction time, balance, endurance, focus, motion, and equipment design. Its Science of Soccer area connects these ideas with Miami’s 2026 summer of international soccer.

    Some stations involve active movement. Closed shoes are required inside the exhibition, and adults should supervise children while they use the physical interactives.

    • Weather: Expect short outdoor transitions between buildings. Sun protection and a light rain layer can be useful in the 305.

    From Junior Museum to Biscayne Bay Landmark

    1949–1950: The Junior Museum Begins

    A group of women from the Junior League of Miami began planning a regional science museum in 1949. A house on Biscayne Boulevard became the Junior Museum of Miami in 1950.

    1960: A New Home at Vizcaya

    The institution opened as the Miami Museum of Science on three acres of the historic Vizcaya complex, where it remained for 55 years.

    1966: Space Transit Planetarium

    The museum added the Space Transit Planetarium, later known to television audiences through the astronomy program Star Gazers.
