The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in downtown Santa Fe centers on the art, working life, personal history, and legacy of Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986). Opened to the public in July 1997, the museum is closely connected to New Mexico, where O’Keeffe spent decades living and working. Its holdings extend beyond paintings and works on paper to photographs, correspondence, art materials, clothing, furnishings, natural objects she collected, and records connected with her homes and career.
What the Museum Covers
The museum describes its holdings as the largest repository of O’Keeffe’s artwork, personal effects, and related archival material. The collections allow her paintings to be studied alongside the objects, photographs, documents, and places associated with their creation rather than treating the artwork as an isolated body of material.
The Santa Fe galleries trace different periods of O’Keeffe’s career. Displays can include her early work as a student and teacher, work associated with her years on the East Coast, abstractions, flowers, architectural subjects, landscapes, bones, and imagery developed during her long relationship with New Mexico. Because works rotate and temporary exhibitions change, the exact selection visible during a visit is not fixed.
Current Exhibition in Santa Fe
As of October 2026, the museum’s listed current exhibition is Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country, on view through November 1, 2026. The exhibition addresses Tewa people, art, culture, and landscapes while examining how Tewa presence relates to the histories commonly told around O’Keeffe and northern New Mexico. Current and upcoming exhibition dates can be checked on the museum’s official exhibitions page.
The Johnson Street galleries are scheduled to begin another major installation period in November 2026. Spaces of Becoming and Georgia O’Keeffe & Sam Scott are scheduled to open on November 21, 2026, with both listed through April 15, 2028.
O’Keeffe’s Personal Objects and Archives
The museum’s role is not limited to displaying paintings. Its collections include O’Keeffe’s belongings from her New Mexico homes, including furnishings, clothing, books, art materials, rocks, bones, and other objects connected with her daily life and artistic practice. Archival collections preserve correspondence, photographs, exhibition records, ephemera, business papers, and other documentation related to O’Keeffe and people in her circle.
The Michael S. Engl Family Foundation Library and Archive is housed separately at 135 Grant Avenue in Santa Fe. It collects material concerning O’Keeffe, her contemporaries, related regional histories, and Modernism. Research visits are available by appointment rather than as part of ordinary admission to the museum galleries.
The Museum’s Connection to Abiquiú
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum operates more than the gallery building at 217 Johnson Street. It also cares for O’Keeffe’s historic properties in northern New Mexico. Her Home and Studio in Abiquiú is open through reserved tours during its seasonal operating period. Tours begin at the O’Keeffe Welcome Center in Abiquiú, approximately 52 miles from Santa Fe.
O’Keeffe also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, about 12 miles from Abiquiú. The museum cares for that property, but the Ghost Ranch residence is not open to the public. Visitors should therefore distinguish the Santa Fe museum galleries, the Abiquiú Home and Studio, the Abiquiú Welcome Center, and the Santa Fe Library and Archive when planning a trip.
Planning a Visit to the Santa Fe Galleries
The museum normally opens daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and advance tickets are recommended. During the International Balloon Fiesta period from October 3 through October 11, 2026, the museum has announced extended hours until 6:00 PM. General admission to the Santa Fe galleries is currently listed at $24. Reduced-rate or free admission is available in several categories, including programs for children, students, seniors, members, New Mexico residents on selected days, and other eligible visitors. Current ticket options are published on the museum’s official admission page.
The museum estimates an average gallery visit at about one hour. A complimentary self-guided audio tour is available, and visitors are encouraged to bring earbuds. Non-flash photography is permitted in most gallery areas, while filming, tripods, and drones are not permitted. Large bags, backpacks, and luggage cannot be taken into the galleries; a coatroom and lockers are available.
There is no on-site public parking at the museum. Downtown Santa Fe has city parking garages and metered street parking nearby. Passenger drop-off is possible outside the museum at 217 Johnson Street.
Accessibility
The Santa Fe galleries have electronically assisted public entrance doors, accessible restroom stalls, and courtesy wheelchairs available on a first-come, first-served basis. The museum also offers discounted admission for guests with disabilities, while aides or caretakers may receive free admission under its current accessibility policy.
Access O’Keeffe and Online Research
The museum also maintains Access O’Keeffe, its online research and collections platform. The project functions as a digital catalogue raisonné and provides information about all known works by O’Keeffe rather than only works physically owned by the museum. More than 2,200 works are represented through searchable records that can include images, exhibition histories, archival information, and related research data.
Access O’Keeffe also connects artwork records with the museum’s archives, historic-home collections, and the artist’s belongings. The separate archive finding-aid system provides access to descriptions of processed archival collections for researchers who need material beyond what is displayed in the public galleries.
The New O’Keeffe Campus
A new Georgia O’Keeffe Museum building is under construction in downtown Santa Fe and is scheduled to open in summer 2028. The planned 54,000-square-foot building will add gallery, learning, conservation, storage, and public spaces to the museum campus. The project is being built on the 100 block of Grant Avenue, close to the existing museum facilities.
The current galleries at 217 Johnson Street remain open during construction. The museum has stated that the Johnson Street building will remain part of the O’Keeffe campus as the expanded facilities are developed.
